Weather Channel site supports push for .mobi domain

BARCELONA, Spain—Top Level Domain Ltd., which is promoting mobile-specific domains, added to its .mobi push with the launch of weather.mobi, a trial URL that provides full access to The Weather Channel Mobile content.

MTLD said it issued the temporary domain name to The Weather Channel in order to demonstrate .mobi capabilities.

Some analysts have questioned the need for a mobile-only domain, saying Wireless Application Protocol technology uptake and Web browsers that format Web sites for mobile consumption are sufficient. The .mobi domain is set for commercial launch this summer, according to mTLD.

Earlier this month, the company released guidelines for users of the .mobi domain.
