DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.-Sprint Nextel Corp. is continuing the former Nextel Communications Corp.’s support of NASCAR, as it introduces a new handheld scanner that is expected to be available for rent at all NASCAR Nextel Cup Series events this year.
The scanner, called the NASCAR Nextel FanView, has video, audio and data capabilities and combines the race telecast with up to seven in-car camera channels, live audio feeds that allow fans to listen to driver and team conversations, ability to access the race radio broadcast, and an audio-play feature. The FanView also offers real-time race statistics and timing and scoring data. The device uses technology from Kangaroo.TV and transmits information over the 2.5 GHz wireless spectrum. Rental rates will be $50 per day or $70 for a race weekend.
