Nextel names NASCAR marketers

RESTON, Va.-Nextel Communications Inc. named communications and marketing directors for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, which the carrier in June signed a 10-year contract to sponsor beginning in 2004.

Nextel appointed Jill Gregory director of series marketing where she will be responsible for all marketing activities, promoting the series brand, and developing and maintaining relationships with teams, drivers, promoters and fans. Prior to joining Nextel, Gregory was vice president and general manager for GMS Marketing, where she managed all sports, event and hospitality activities for Visa USA and other clients.

Nextel also named Mike Mooney director of corporate communications for the series where he will be responsible for managing media relations, community relations and special events for the series. Prior to joining Nextel, Mooney was principal for Cox Marketing Group where he was responsible for strategy, execution and measurement for clients’ sports public-relations programs.
