Nextel snags 2 GHz spectrum in Nucentrix auction

Nextel Communications Inc. won a number of wireless licenses, spectrum and tower leases for $51 million in an auction of certain assets of bankrupt wireless broadband service provider Nucentrix Broadband Networks Inc.

The assets include licenses for 128 megahertz of spectrum in the 2.1 GHz and 2.5 GHz spectrum bands in more than 90 small and mid-sized markets in Oklahoma, Texas and the Midwest, and 20 megahertz of spectrum in the 2.3 GHz spectrum band in a number of Texas markets.

Nucentrix said Nextel would provide debtor in possession funding through the closing of its bankruptcy proceedings, which is expected to be completed later next year.
