Updated Bluetooth spec adopted

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-The Bluetooth Special Interest Group reported the adoption of Bluetooth Specification Version 1.2, which the organization said includes new features resulting in a more reliable and robust user experience for consumers.

Updated features include the use of adaptive frequency hopping, which the Bluetooth SIG said would reduce interference between wireless technologies using the same unlicensed 2.4 GHz spectrum band as Bluetooth; enhanced voice processing to improve the quality of voice connections using error detection methodologies; and faster connection setup. The Bluetooth SIG added that the new specification is backward compatible with the Version 1.1 specification.

Devices using the new specification are expected to begin shipping early next year with volume shipments expected during the next 12 to 18 months.
