TIM launches TV service in advance of UMTS

MILAN, Italy-Italy’s largest mobile operator Telecom Italia Mobile said that although it has not commercially launched its third-generation network, it has launched services that will become available on UMTS, including television services.

TIM said beginning this week, users can connect via WAP to a “virtual remote” after selecting the Mobile TV icon on their handsets and then can choose desired TV channels. Users will then be able to see programs being broadcast on chosen networks. The operator’s television partners for the “experimental phase” are La 7, MTV, CFN/CNBC and Coming Soon.

TIM said the service is the first of its kind in the world.

TIM also added that its UMTS service will become available “in the coming months.” It said it has outdoor UMTS coverage of 90 percent of the population in the country’s major cities. Complete coverage will take about five years, the operator said.
