UTStarcom expects 3Q handset sales to hit 4.5 million

ALAMEDA, Calif.-UTStarcom Inc. said it expects its third-quarter handset sales to leap above 4.5 million units, representing approximately 50 percent of revenues.

The company describes the estimate as its highest revenue to date for handset shipments.

“UTStarcom has maintained strong handset and subscriber growth, as well as 72-percent market share in a highly competitive handset market, because our products are easily deployed, future-proof, offer a quick return on investment and are cost effective for the end user,” said Ying Wu, chief executive officer of UTStarcom China.

The company also announced a $30 million Internet Protocol-based Personal Access System contract with Sichuab China Telecom for the city of Chengdu, the largest PAS capacity deployment in the world, according to the vendor.

“We continue to see tremendous demand for PAS service throughout China as evidenced by this most recent expansion in Chengdu,” said Simon Le, senior vice president of sales for UTStarcom China.
