HELSINKI, Finland-The world’s No. 1 phone maker, Nokia Corp., continued to expand its broad product portfolio with several new handsets, including an EDGE phone for the United States and a CDMA camera phone.
The moves come as Nokia and the rest of the handset industry gear up for the Christmas season, with industry watchers expecting a flood of new devices.
First, Nokia unveiled its new 3200 EDGE phone, which includes versions for Europe, Asia and the Americas and will ship in the fourth quarter. The advanced handset features an integrated digital camera, support for Java applications and what Nokia calls “cut-out covers” for users to personalize their phones.
Nokia also released its new 6225 CDMA 1xRTT phone, which includes an integrated digital camera and global positioning system support. Nokia said the phone, expected to be available in the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions during the fourth quarter, features its own CDMA chipset.
Nokia also released its new 6560 TDMA phone and its CDMA 3105 phone. The CDMA phone will be available in the Asia-Pacific market in the fourth quarter.
Finally, Nokia also released the details for this year’s Nokia Game, the company’s annual attempt to spark the wireless data market through a game promotion event. This year’s game will feature phone-based applications, as well as Internet and text-messaging aspects, and will serve to promote Nokia’s upcoming N-Gage mobile-phone/video-game device.
