T-Mobile USA tempts iPhone switchers with new offer

Just ahead of the launch of its iPhone 5, T-Mobile USA is sweetening the pot by offering a trade-in credit for customers turning in legacy iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models. Those devices would also be presumably coming from a rival carrier as T-Mobile USA has never officially carried said devices.

T-Mobile USA said that through June 16, “well-qualified” customers that trade in their old iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 devices for a brand-new iPhone 5 will not have to place a down payment and could receive a credit of up to $120. T-Mobile USA is currently adding $20 per month to a customer’s rate plan in addition to a variable deposit depending on iPhone 5 model.

T-Mobile USA’s iPhone 5 is set to be available from the carrier through company-owned stores beginning at 9 a.m. local time on April 12, or from its website. The carrier did note that the financing option was not available in the District of Columbia.

While it has never officially offered the iPhone 4S or iPhone 4 models, T-Mobile USA reported that it was supporting 1.8 million iPhone devices on its network at the end of 2012, linked in part to an aggressive marketing campaign targeting AT&T Mobility customers.

The latest T-Mobile USA sweetener comes a day after Virgin Mobile USA, which is a prepaid brand of Sprint Nextel, began offering customers $100 if they switched from T-Mobile USA. The news also follows reports that AT&T Mobility is set to more aggressively target the prepaid space with its All In One Wireless offering.

These are heady times indeed in the prepaid space.
