WASHINGTON-The FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau on Thursday clarified that carriers will not be liable for 911 information that is not properly relayed to public-safety answering points while a customer is porting a telephone number from wireline to wireless or vice versa.
Additionally, the Federal Communications Commission will not allow wireless carriers to impose out-porting restrictions on customers wishing to leave. In other words, a carrier cannot prevent a subscriber from churning if they have an outstanding balance.
Finally, the FCC said it will resolve the wireless/wireline issue raised by the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association before the Nov. 24 wireless local number portability implementation deadline. CTIA has said this issue must be resolved by Labor Day for WLNP to be successfully implemented.
