SAN DIEGO-China Unicom said it has reached a milestone of 10 million subscribers on its CDMA network, underscoring the quick uptake of subscribers since October last year when its subscribers hit the 4 million mark.
The numbers pale in comparison with China Unicom’s overall GSM subscriber figures and China Mobile’s total GSM user base. China Unicom has more than 30 million GSM subscribers, and China Mobile has more than 80 million customers. However, China Unicom’s CDMA service has seen steady growth since its launch in early 2002.
“In 2003, Unicom has continued its growth with the rollout of cdma2000 1x services, its planned nationwide launch of BREW-enabled data services and the formation of a joint venture with Qualcomm, Unicom-BREW Telecommunication Technologies Ltd., to encourage the domestic developer community,” said Qualcomm Inc.
