Palm upgrades consumer, enterprise PDA lines

MILPITAS, Calif.-Palm Inc. introduced a number of upgrades to its personal digital assistant line-up including multimedia upgrades to its consumer-oriented Zire PDA and adding Wi-Fi and more memory to its enterprise-grade Tungsten line.

The upgrades to the Zire product, which result in the new $300 Zire 71, include the addition of a built-in camera, a high-resolution color screen, and the ability to play MP3s and watch video clips on the device.

The Tungsten upgrades, which result in the $500 Tungsten C, include Palm’s first application of built-in Wi-Fi capabilities as well as 64 megabytes of memory that the company said will allow the product to run more applications and store more data.

Palm will promote Wayport’s Wi-Fi service to users of the new Wi-Fi-enabled Palm Tungsten C.

Under the agreement, purchasers of the new Palm device will include a 30-day free trial of Wayport’s Wi-Fi and wired Internet access in more than 525 hotels and a 25 percent discount at Wayport’s airport business centers.

The companies will also co-promote each other to customers via e-newsletters and Web sites.
