U.S. carriers agree to short code for TV program

SEATTLE-Universal short codes seem more of a possibility following a new announcement from messaging companies Mobliss and LogicaCMG, which are managing an interactive TV application that allows mobile-phone users to vote for contestants on USA Networks’ upcoming “Nashville Star” TV show.

AT&T Wireless, Cingular Wireless, Alltel, Nextel Communications, T-Mobile, Western Wireless and Cellular South have all agreed to use the same short code, 7827 (STAR), for the TV show. The application also marks the introduction of Mobliss’ new MoTV cross-carrier interactive TV promotion.

A group of the nation’s largest wireless carriers are currently in discussions with the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association to standardize a set of universal short codes, which would allow users of any carrier to use the same short codes.
