WASHINGTON-The Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association today said it established a state affairs division, a move that comes as mobile-phone carriers face heightened scrutiny from public utility commissions, state attorneys general and the courts over rising consumer complaints about coverage, billing, advertising and service contracts.
On Monday, RCR Wireless News reported 22 state attorneys general are working on a plan to force wireless carriers to cease questionable business practices or else face legal action.
Eva Wohn, who oversaw state issues as a former government relations manager at AT&T Wireless Services Inc., will head the new CTIA unit.
“Consumers and businesses cannot afford 50 different flavors of unnecessary, costly and conflicting state wireless requirements,” stated CTIA. “Ms Wohn will work with industry and state government officials to encourage reasonable, cost-effective solutions that address legitimate state concerns without diminishing the extraordinary benefits consumers and businesses receive from a competitive wireless industry.”
