BEIJING-China’s TCL Mobile Communications sold 6.21 million mobile phones last year, exceeding its sales target of 5 million units. The company is China’s largest domestic handset maker. Sales surged almost fourfold compared with 2001.
This year, TCL may be surpassed by rival Ningbo Bird, which aims to sell 10 million handsets compared with TCL’s sales target of 9 million.
TCL has formed a partnership with Britain’s TTP Communications to develop advanced models for the European market, including a multimedia messaging service (MMS)-enabled camera phone. The company aims to become the world’s fifth-largest handset maker in the coming three years.
TCL is also the world’s third-largest television set manufacturer with sales of 8.02 million television sets, behind South Korea’s Samsung and China’s Changhong Electronics.
