Jamdat helps Verizon roll out ‘Rings’ promotion

LOS ANGELES-Wireless entertainment publisher Jamdat Mobile Inc. will be the company behind much of Verizon Wireless’ new “The Lord of the Rings” promotion, developing the games, images and ring tones for the promotion.

Jamdat licensed the movie franchise from New Line Cinema. The applications will be exclusive through Verizon until March 2004, and then Jamdat will be able to sell the applications through any carrier.

A Verizon spokesman said messaging company Upoc will also manage part of the carrier’s promotion.

Licensing deals are becoming more important in wireless as big media companies look to expand their brand into the wireless channel.

“Jamdat is honored to be working with New Line Cinema on ‘The Lord of the Rings’,” said Mitch Lasky, Jamdat’s chief executive officer. “This partnership further establishes Jamdat’s position as the wireless publisher of choice for the motion picture community.”
