BEIJING-Following complaints from rival China Mobile, China Unicom is scaling back price cuts to attract customers to its CDMA service. The company promised to focus more on profitability and less on subscriber growth during the coming year.
CDMA users should pay a minimum monthly charge of 100 yuan (US$12.08). Following the launch of aggressive promotion packages during the past months, CDMA users enjoyed deep discounts of 30 percent to 50 percent compared with China Mobile’s GSM rates.
Fixed-line carrier China Telecom, which does not have a mobile license, nevertheless plans to offer mobile subscribers of China Mobile and China Unicom cheaper long-distance rates through dialing of a standard code. The three carriers are still discussing a revenue-sharing agreement.
