Millions of dollars are being sent to Haiti via a number of text-messaging campaigns, according to various sources.
Red Cross text-messaging donations from the United States to Haiti have topped $3 million so far, according to Verizon Wireless, making the campaign the largest outpouring of charitable giving via text messaging to date.
The Mobile Giving Foundation offers text-message services for charitable giving, working with nonprofit organizations and carriers. By texting a keyword to a designated short code via a mobile phone, a $5 or $10 donation can be made. The Mobile Giving Foundation said 100% of the donations go to the recipient charity, and the donation appears as a charge on a person’s wireless carrier bill.
