BPL contracts with Navin for VMS services

NEW DELHI, India-Navin Communications, which supplies voice messaging services, has partnered with another Indian cellular operator, BPL Mobile, for its VMS services for prepaid subscribers.

“The service is free and allows BPL subscribers to be reachable whether their mobile phones are switched off or busy,” said F.B. Cardoso, president and chief executive officer of BPL Mobile.

The service operates on the same “store and forward” mechanism as short message service. A voice message is digitized and sent over the Internet from the source server to the destination server, where the mailbox for the recipient resides.

Navin has already partnered with other Indian mobile operators, including Hutchison Max, Spice Telecom and Escotel Mobile Communications, and is in talks with other cellular companies, as well as fixed-line service providers.

Navin’s founder, Sabeer Bhatia, is also the founder of Hotmail.
