Two short listed for Thai CDMA expansion

NEW DELHI, India-Two consortia led by United Communications Industry (Ucom) and Lucent Technologies have been short listed at the end of the first round of bidding for the 15 billion baht (US$353.6 million) CDMA expansion project of Thai government agency Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT).

The Ucom consortium consists of Ucom subsidiary Real Time, Motorola, Nortel and Samsung, while Lucent has teamed with EPC Solutions. CAT’s CDMA project is being executed by Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia, a joint venture of CAT and the Hong Kong-based Hutchison.

CAT Senior Executive Vice President Prajin Kecharananta was quoted in Thai media as saying that Lucent and the Ucom groups had met the requirements in the first round. Now the two groups will be expected to import their equipment for validation and testing.

The final bidder is expected to be announced in December, and service rollout will take place during the following eight months.
