Nice move Apple, very nice. With the uploading of one simple image Apple have stolen most of Facebook’s thunder just an hour before the social giant’s much-anticipated press conference.
Without warning earlier this afternoon the image appeared on the Apple.com frontpage proclaiming that “Today is just another day. That you’ll never forget.” Despite sounding like a Phil Collins lyric, the graphic is actually teasing an iTunes announcement tomorrow at 10am EST. We’re not expecting anything earth-shattering or Apple probably would have dragged Jobs out on stage to do it in person, however it could have something to do with Apple’s recent integration of Twitter into Ping, having failed to lure Facebook to their party. Maybe they actually have hammered out a deal with Facebook now? Maybe they fixed that iPhone alarm bug? Who knows!
Apple has a history of timely teases and press releases – their favourite trick is to announce products in January and instantly suck all the air out of the CES press bubble – however their success this time will likely hinge on the scale of Facebook’s imminent announcement. If Facebook can blow everybody away with a revolutionary email client (unlikely if you ask me), then an iTunes update will likely fall by the wayside. However the weight carried by an Apple announcement will derail even the biggest company’s grand plans.
Here we go again – Apple announcement tomorrow
