GPRS roaming launched in Nordic region

OXFORD, United Kingdom—In an effort to stimulate the use of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)-based services, Telia Mobile has become the first cell-phone operator to offer GPRS roaming throughout the Nordic countries. The company said its subscribers would be able to use the services beginning in February and would also have the opportunity to test free GPRS access during February and March when travelling in the Nordic region, except Iceland, and using Telia’s networks.

This move came as one of Nokia’s major investors, Nordea Investment Management, said that while people within Scandinavia and Finland are buying GPRS handsets, there is little evidence that they are using high-speed data services. The company also claimed that most cell phones sold during the build up to Christmas were low-cost units without GPRS capabilities.
