Pocket-sized wireless ECG machine wins FDA approval

WASHINGTON—A pocket-sized wireless electrocardiogram (ECG) machine that promises easier, faster heart measurements, has been approved by the FDA.

PocketView ECG, created by MicroMedical Industries, is made from a Compaq PDA embedded with miniaturized versions of the software and hardware used in full-sized EKG machines. The PocketView ECG is more convenient for health care workers in several ways: it allows monitoring from almost anywhere; doctors can view readings on PDA screens; ambulance workers can transmit results over wireless phones to a computer; and a printer can be plugged in to the PocketView to create a traditional paper printout.
