Pepsi plans wireless system for vending machine purchases

PURCHASE, New York, United States—Pepsi-Cola North America will deploy a wireless technology system that will allow customers to use their credit cards to make vending machine purchases.

The system currently operates on a test basis in Memphis, Tennessee, and works alongside existing coin and bill payment options to give consumers three different ways to purchase a drink. Further, the new system will allow Pepsi bottlers to get up-to-the-minute inventory information from the vending machines via a Web browser.

New York City-based U.S. Wireless Data developed the card payment and telemetric technology, called Synapse.
