China Mobile contracts Ericsson for GPRS

BEIJING—Ericsson has signed an agreement worth nearly US$535 million to supply GSM/General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) equipment, software and services for Guangdong Mobile Communication.

“Ericsson will deploy a number of features in the network to further enhance operation and provide new value-added services for end users, such as integrated prepaid functions,” said the company.

After the expansion, the network will accommodate more than 27 million subscribers and offer GPRS-based services over its entire coverage area. Ericsson’s largest joint venture in China, Nanjing Ericsson Panda Communications, will supply the equipment.
