TOKYO—Matsushita Communications Industrial tied up with UTStarcom for third-generation (3G) technology. Based on the bilateral agreement, both firms will jointly develop and provide total network systems based on wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA) targeting the world market, including China.
Matsushita will provide base transceiver stations (BTSs) and handsets, and UTStarcom will provide Internet Protocol (IP)-based core network systems for the joint effort. Both firms will jointly display their W-CDMA-based 3G system at PT/Wireless and Networks Comm China 2001, a large exhibition to begin 23 October in Beijing. Matsushita and UTStarcom have been jointly providing fixed wireless access (FWA) systems based on PHS technology since 1997.
