Innovative solution uses Unisys ClearPath ePortal technology to let CEDAE customers pay bills anywhere using their smartphones
Sao Paulo, April 26, 2011 – Customers of Rio de Janeiro water utility company CEDAE can pay their water bills using their smartphones, thanks to an innovative new solution from Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS).
CEDAE, which provides water services to approximately 9,000,000 people in Rio de Janeiro, wanted to provide its increasingly mobile customer base with convenient online account services. A long-time innovator in Brazil’s water utility industry, CEDAE saw more of its customers using mobile devices and decided to offer direct online access to the company’s services.
Using a ClearPath ePortal specialty engine – a special-purpose processor on a Unisys ClearPath Libra server – Unisys created a Web interface to CEDAE’s core payment application. Using their smartphones, the utility’s customers can access a secure Web portal that displays a barcode for their bill. Optical readers read the barcode from the smartphone screen and transmit the payment through the banking network, without requiring the customer to print a payment receipt.
The solution also allows CEDAE customers to view electronic proofs of payments and their payment history.
“Our goal is to make it easy for our customers to pay their bills whenever it is convenient no matter where they are – in the office, at home, at the supermarket, or anywhere else,” says Wagner Victer, chairman of CEDAE. “The mobile solution from Unisys has enabled CEDAE to undertake a bold initiative that not only helps streamline our operations, but also gives our customers more flexibility in managing their personal business.”
The ClearPath ePortal technology allows CIOs to modernize mission-critical applications without altering the applications and to create easy-to-use graphical interfaces for more intuitive, simplified access to services.
“With this mobile solution, CEDAE has established itself as a leader in making customer convenience a key part of its IT and business strategy,” says Daniele Ribeiro, director of technology solutions, Unisys Brazil. “The CEDAE solution also demonstrates Unisys’ commitment to bringing our clients practical innovations that make use of readily available consumer technologies in a secure, mission-critical environment.”
