HELSINKI, Finland—Sonera said it is re-pricing its General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) services based on the amount of transmitted data. Current pilot users can continue with their current GPRS pricing until the end of the year.
The new packages include either 1 Megabyte or 10 Megabits of transmitted data for a set fee. Extra megabits can be purchased if necessary. Users pay only for the data transmitted, not for the time used for the data transmissions.
Many carriers have experienced difficulties in moving from charging users for services based on airtime versus data sent, which is an advantage of GPRS services for users.
