AT&T Wireless extends GPRS service

REDMOND, Washington, United States—AT&T Wireless launched GSM/GPRS service in the U.S. cities of Las Vegas, Phoenix and Portland, Oregon, following the initial launch of its service in Seattle in July.

AT&T Wireless said customers can purchase GSM/GPRS products in more than 500 outlets throughout the four markets, including AT&T retail stores, individual dealer locations and national retail outlets. The only handset currently available is the Motorola Timeport P7382i, which retails for US$200. Service plans start at US$50 per month for 400 voice minutes and 1 Megabyte of data transmission. Incremental data is billed at less than US$0.01 per kilobyte.

The carrier said it plans to launch GSM/GPRS service in Detroit within the next several weeks and deploy in 40 percent of the population it serves by the end of the year, with 100-percent coverage by the end of 2002.
