HP clarifies job cut reports

SAN FRANCISCO—Hewlett Packard Co. has denied reports in the World Street Journal and Reuters that it plans a new wave of 7,000 job reductions, saying the cuts were previously announced in a July 26 press release.

“We had announced the layoffs long before and noted that this did not include consolidation, outsourcing and divestitures,” said Dave Berman, the company’s spokesman, adding that the news reports probably emanated from Q&A’s on their web site, which reiterated an old position.

He said the company also announced that over a 24-month period it would lay off 15,000 workers through attrition and targeted job cuts.
