DALLAS—Nortel Networks said it has won a contract to build an asynchronous transfer mode backbone network for Cingular Wireless in 87 markets in the United States.
The network, which will cover about 21 million subscribers, offers intelligent capabilities and transport for wireless Internet voice and data traffic.
“By unifying IP, wireless and optical technologies, we are driving down the cost of wireless Internet,” said Peter MacKinnon, senior vice president, wireless Internet solutions.
