Nortel clinches GSM contract with Chunghwa

BEIJING—Nortel Networks signed a US$250 million contract with Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom to expand the carrier’s GSM 900 MHz and GSM 1800 MHz dual-mode network to a capacity of 6.5 million subscribers.
Chunghwa Telecom expects growth in SMS-traffic and prepaid subscriber numbers. Nortel Networks built the initial mobile network for Chunghwa Telecom in 1994, Nortel Networks China chairman Robert Mao told Business Weekly.
