LoRaWAN has answered the question of whether LPWAN can work at scale. With deployments spanning utilities, buildings, industry, and agriculture, the focus is now shifting to where its economics can deliver the greatest IoT value.

For years, low-power wide-area networking (LPWAN) for IoT has continued to face one simple question: does it actually work at scale? That question has been settled by LoRaWAN, an LPWAN technology that now connects more than 125 million devices worldwide, growing at 25% annually, and deployed across live commercial and municipal networks – not just pilot programs. 

The conversation has moved on to a new question: where can LPWAN for IoT deliver the greatest business value? Again, LoRaWAN is the technology most ready to provide the answer.

A market that has already scaled

LoRaWAN has the largest LPWAN footprint of any open standard in the world, excluding China. That scale is underpinned by a robust ecosystem of more than 340 member organizations, including chipset makers, network operators, system integrators and device manufacturers. More than 650 certified devices and 1,000-plus products now sit in the LoRaWAN Marketplace, giving businesses genuine choice at every layer of the stack, from chipsets through to network servers.

The result is a technology stack with genuine choice built in: multiple vendors, multiple deployment models, and no single point of dependency for the businesses adopting it.

That breadth shows up across many industry verticals, helping LoRaWAN to achieve the widest adoption of any LPWAN IoT connectivity method. Utilities and metering represent the largest single deployment base by device count, with millions of water, gas and electricity meters already reporting over LoRaWAN networks worldwide. Smart buildings are the fastest-accelerating category, where LoRaWAN has become the default wireless choice for the majority of monitoring and control applications outside of high-bandwidth, real-time use cases. 

Smart cities, industrial sites, and agricultural operations are all following the same pattern: LoRaWAN moving from an interesting option to the incumbent solution It is often the only economically viable one once distance, battery life and deployment cost are all factored in.

Where the value shows up

Adoption numbers tell part of the story. The best part is told by each of the organizations deploying LoRaWAN and what they are gaining from these deployments.

At Mission Terrace, a 202-unit apartment community in Santa Clara, California, aging analog water meters that had to be read manually once a month were replaced with 404 ultrasonic meters connected over LoRaWAN. Three indoor gateways gave the property building-wide coverage without a single new cable run. Within the first two months, the system flagged six water leaks before they became larger problems, and eliminating the need for remote meter displays saved the property an estimated $40,400.

At CHEMPARK in Germany, the chemical group CURRENTA faced a different challenge: monitoring steam networks across three industrial sites without shutting down production to install wiring. Forty-five wireless sensors were retrofitted onto high-temperature steam pipes, feeding a digital twin that automates burner optimization. The result is a seven-figure annual savings potential and an estimated 9,200 tons of CO2 avoided each year, delivered without a single production line going offline for installation.

The same economics apply far beyond buildings and factories. At Tsavo National Park in Kenya, a 38,500 km² reserve, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust partnered with the Kenya Wildlife Service, Cisco, Netmore, and 51 Degrees to deploy a LoRaWAN IoT network delivering real-time data on wildlife, ranger patrols and park conditions. The system supports rhino protection, elephant recovery, and conflict prevention across an area too vast and remote for constant human monitoring. It is a use case with no cellular towers, no main power and no realistic wired alternative, which makes the point sharper than any enterprise deployment could: where nothing else works, LoRaWAN does.

What connects all three deployments is not the application, but the underlying economics that help give LoRaWAN the highest accessibility of any LPWAN IoT technology. Long range, low power consumption, and low infrastructure cost combine to make continuous monitoring economically viable at a scale that other wireless technologies simply cannot match. That combination is what turns a connectivity project into a business case, whether the asset being monitored is a boiler, a hotel room, or an elephant herd.

Why LoRaWAN specifically

Plenty of technologies compete in the LPWAN space, from cellular-based alternatives to proprietary networks. What distinguishes LoRaWAN is that it is an open standard, not a single vendor’s product, built on an unlicensed spectrum band with low-cost infrastructure and open-source implementations available to any organization that wants to build on it. 

Organizations can choose public, private or hybrid network models, mix and match hardware and network providers, and avoid the lock-in that comes with proprietary alternatives. That flexibility matters more as deployments grow, as a network built on an open standard can absorb new vendors, new device types, and new use cases without a costly re-architecture.

That openness has positioned LoRaWAN alongside cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as a genuine fourth pillar of wireless connectivity, purpose-built for the long-range, low-power use cases others were never designed to serve well. In some categories, that role has already moved from aspiration to fact. Building management systems, panic button networks, and livestock monitoring increasingly treat LoRaWAN not as an alternative, but as the default.

An evolving standard

The LoRa Alliance continues to invest in and evolve the LoRaWAN standard, which represents the technical foundation at the core of this same story. The release of two new specifications, TS014 and TS018, allows networks to automatically pull a device’s profile the moment it’s added, eliminating the need for manual configuration. 

A companion technical document, TR016, gives developers clear guidance for building on LoRaWAN’s Relay feature, extending reliable connectivity into places a gateway can’t reach economically, such as behind thick walls, underground, or in remote sites with no power or backhaul.

These new features allow LoRaWAN networks to convert device onboarding from a manual, error-prone process into something that takes seconds, even across fleets of tens of thousands of devices. Together, the new specs and the new technical document also represent the latest–but certainly not the last—step in the years-long evolution of the LoRaWAN standard.

The opportunity ahead

The industry no longer needs to make the case that LoRaWAN works. What remains is one more interesting and more commercially urgent question: which organizations will move fastest to capture the value now available to them? LoRaWAN’s combination of scale, openness and proven economics provides them with what they need to answer that question for themselves.
