China’s Eastcom reports lower profits

BEIJING—Chinese mobile telecom equipment supplier Eastern Communications reported a 28-percent fall in profits to CNY131.21 million (US$15.87 million) in the first half of the year, despite a 53-percent surge in revenue to CNY4.34 billion (US$525 million).
The company hopes that construction of China Unicom’s CDMA network will provide new opportunities amid falling handset and system equipment prices. Eastcom already signed CDMA equipment and service contracts valued at CNY630 million (US$76.21 million). Its joint venture with Motorola clinched CNY1.5 billion (US$181 million) in orders.
