Nextel announces enhancements to Java-enabled handsets

SAN FRANCISCO-Nextel Communications Inc.’s i85s and i50sx Java-enabled handsets, provided by Motorola Inc., will soon provide support for Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol, Over-the-air download application and serial port connectivity beginning in August.

“These enhancements reinforce Motorola’s and Nextel’s joint commitment to providing developers with leading edge tools for developing applications that address the needs of business customers,” said Bill Werner, corporate vice president of Motorola and general manager of the company’s iDEN Subscriber Croup.”

The enhancements are being provided in all J2ME technology-enabled handsets manufactured after early August. Handsets previously purchased can be updated with the new features by upgrading the phone software.
