Wireless phones and driving appear to go together as well as coffee and doughnuts, according to an online consumer poll conducted by Verizon Wireless, which showed 95 percent of the more than 2,500 respondents admitted to making a phone call while driving.
Of those coordinated enough to do both activities at once, 35 percent said they only made calls a few times per week, while 33 percent said they made a few calls per day. Roughly one in eight respondents said they were on their wireless phones non-stop while driving.
While only 31 percent of drivers said they use a hands-free kit while talking and driving, 18 percent said they were planning to get a hands-free device in the near future.
When queried about what these motor mouths were talking about while driving, 42 percent said they use their wireless phones primarily to keep in touch with friends and family, with 23 percent using their phones mostly for work. Nearly half said they have used their wireless phones to dial 911 in an emergency.
Even with such dedicated use of their wireless phones,47 percent of those surveyed said reading while driving was the most distracting behavior while behind the wheel.
