Siemens wins contract in Mauritius

MUNICH, Germany-Cellplus, a wholly owned subsidiary and mobile operator of Mauritius Telecom, has awarded Siemens Telecommunications a turnkey contract to design and implement a full WAP-enabled solution.

This solution, which will take the form of a phased approach, is intended to see Cellplus become the first mobile network in Mauritius to launch a WAP service and become a full-fledged and leading mobile Internet service provider.

As Cellplus had no existing WAP infrastructure in place, the main objective was to provide a WAP Gateway as an entry point for Cellplus subscribers to access existing WAP content on the Internet. The WAP-enabled solution, currently being implemented by Siemens Telecommunications Integration Solutions and Services Unit, covers the integration of platforms, gateways and servers into the existing network infrastructure, through to the development, commissioning and customization of the mobile e-mail application.

To meet Cellplus’ business objectives and time constraints, phase one has been optimized to provide a cost-effective but reliable WAP service, with quick time-to-market. As part of the marketing initiative, Siemens also will offer a WAP Mail application to send and receive e-mails from cell phones.

Phase two will offer scalability for future expansion and applications. This will allow Cellplus to increase its data user base and expand the array of value-added services.
