SnapTrack, SignalSoft aim to be location powerhouse

SnapTrack Inc. and SignalSoft Corp. have officially agreed to combine their resources and jointly market and deliver location-based applications and systems.

SnapTrack, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc., designs and manufactures GPS hardware for wireless devices, and SignalSoft provides software for location-based billing, safety and tracking.

The companies said they will work together to ensure their products are interoperable, and they will support each other’s marketing efforts for the combined solutions.

“We’ve been working with SignalSoft for several years to demonstrate the viability of wireless location technology and applications to the carrier community, and we’re very pleased to formalize our relationship with them,” said Steve Poizner, president of SnapTrack.

David Hose, president and chief executive officer of SignalSoft, said location-based services are becoming a key component of the enhanced services portfolio offered by most wireless carriers, and this joint effort will help to solidify the location-based services industry, “and at the same time, help set the stage for promoting standards for wireless location services.”

SignalSoft will be able to shop a comprehensive solution to carriers as a result of this partnership, noted John Cunningham with SnapTrack.

Cunningham said the industry should continue to see more partnerships like this one as the E911 debate settles and carriers are forced to produce revenues from valued-added services such as location-based applications.

Financial terms were not disclosed.
