DoCoMo, HP partner for 4G architecture

TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a joint research effort aimed at improving multimedia delivery and network applications over fourth-generation wireless broadband networks. The companies are calling their 4G multimedia architecture Moto-Media.

The technology is expected to enable high-performance streaming of multimedia content to mobile users based on agent technology, optimal use of network resources and scalable media coding methods. The collaboration will also explore new mobile service concepts, in which people, places and things would be able to interact.

“Our future mobile multimedia services, contemplated in Vision 2010, will require a new application platform for the fourth-generation era. HP Labs has some unique capabilities in this area that we intend to explore,” said Keiji Tachikawa, DoCoMo chief executive officer.

Under the agreement, the companies will finish the shared study by 2003.

HP also announced an agreement with Sprint PCS that calls for the companies to jointly market and sell the HP Openmail Anywhere solution as part of Sprint’s Wireless Web for Business service. The solution allows business customers to wirelessly access their corporate e-mail on HP’s Openmail servers on Sprint Internet-enabled phones.
