Ericsson, Tivoli ally for device management solutions

Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson and IBM’s subsidiary Tivoli Systems Inc. have allied to roll out a set of managed devices the companies believe will be easy for consumers and professional users to reconfigure in a “pay and play” situation.

Employing phrases like “instant service” and “manageable out-of-the-box,” the companies said the solutions will simplify mobile Internet and mobile e-business services for service providers, enterprises and consumers.

The agreement allows Ericsson to integrate Tivoli’s device management technologies with its own next generation of mobile communication devices.

“Ericsson and Tivoli’s combined strengths create powerful synergies that will help service providers and enterprises deploy and maximize the significant revenue potential of mobile services,” said Jan Ahrenbring, vice president of marketing and communications at Ericsson Mobile Communications.

The devices, which will be supported and updated remotely, will be suited for both the General Packet Radio Service and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System technologies.

The solutions also will provide support and help desk services that will make it easy not only to reconfigure settings but also to downlaod software, trade stocks and monitor medical situations.

“Ericsson is dedicated to driving rapid expansion of the mobile Internet to offer personal freedom and convenience for consumers and professionals,” said Ahrenbring.

The companies believe it makes both dollars and sense because it pares down sales and support costs and it will enable mobile operators, service providers and enterprises to quickly introduce new revenue services, reduce the time to set up new services and reduce customer support costs.

Established in 1989, Tivoli Systems Inc. is a global company that provides cross-platform management solutions including networks, systems, applications and business-to-business commerce.
