Lucent Technologies Inc. announced it selected Agere Systems as the new name for its microelectronics spinoff. The spinoff is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter. The name Agere has its roots in the Latin verb “ago,” which means “to lead, to drive, to act,” Lucent said.
XO Communications Inc. said it successfully completed fixed wireless equipment field trials in Boston that resulted in the selection of Triton Network Systems as the nonexclusive provider of its point-to-consecutive-point equipment in the United States.
IBM Corp. and Infineon Technologies AG plan to jointly develop a magnetic RAM technology that could replace much of today’s computer memory technology. The companies said they will be working on magnetic memory chips, which use magnetic rather than electrical structures, to store information. This, the companies said, would make the new chips less expensive to build and would allow them to retain data without being constantly powered.
AppStream entered an agreement with Aplix Corp. to embed its AppStream for Java technology into Aplix’s JBlend operating system. “The integration of AppStream technology for streaming Java applications with Aplix’s JBlend real-time operating system will help accelerate the development of more innovative, powerful applications and services for mobile phones and other wireless devices,” said Uri Raz, chairman and chief executive officer of AppStream. AppStream also announced it opened its Japanese subsidiary, AppStream K.K., in Tokyo.
Business-to-business infrastructure provider InPhonic reached an agreement with Kozmo.com to market Kozmo digital and Internet-ready WAP products. Under the agreement, Kozmo will be able to offer free phones to its customers through InPhonic. The phones will be preprogrammed with a host of Kozmo applications for mobile transactions. This agreement is the latest in a long list for InPhonic. Other recent InPhonic clients include Changewave.com, ClickZen, Element USA, Express.com, Hindunet.org, LaMusica.com, and Smallworld.com.
and Sweepsclub.com. Kozmo is an online retailer, and InPhonic provides a distribution network to companies looking to offer value-added wireless products and services.
