Matsushita, Nortel prepare for 3G interoperability tests

PARIS-Matsushita Communications Industrial Co., Ltd. and Nortel Networks moved to push the standards set by 3G Partnership Projects and their own products and services.

Under a new agreement, the two companies plan to test the interoperability of third-generation mobile terminals and network infrastructure.

The testing, which is expected to begin early next year, will focus on compliance with 3GPP standards, and will include Matsushita’s multimode mobile terminals and Nortel’s wireless Internet architecture.

Matsushita also announced a cooperative agreement with Lucent Technologies Inc. aimed at providing 3G wireless technology solutions incorporating Lucent’s network infrastructure and Panasonic’s mobile terminals.

“We think it is important that our terminals work in the wireless networks of Lucent and therefore value this opportunity to work together concerning interoperability testing,” said Osamu Waki, director and member of the board of Matshushita. “This collaboration will enable us to provide greater satisfaction to end users and operators by assuring the compatibility of Panasonic’s UMTS terminals and Lucent’s network infrastructure.”
