Swiss auction back on

GENEVA-The Financial Times reported the Swiss government will resume its auction of four Universal Mobile Telecommunications System licenses on Dec. 6. The report said the decision was made after the government found no evidence a move by Tele Danmark to take control of two of the Swiss bidders would affect market competition.

The auction was postponed in November when Tele Danmark announced plans to take control of and merge two of the bidders, mobile operator diAx and fixed-line company Sunrise Communications, leaving only four companies to vie for the four licenses.

The government added no evidence was found of illegal agreements among any of the original bidders, the report said.

The four companies now bidding include incumbent operators Swisscom, Orange Communications and the combined Sunrise/diAx entity. Spain’s Telef
