ARLINGTON, Va.-U.S. factory sales of telecommunications equipment reached $47.9 billion for the first half of 2000, a 24.4 percent increase from the same period last year, according to the Telecommunications Industry Association.
“A 24-percent increase in factory sales of telecom equipment for the first half, including comparable growth in exports, is proof that the communications industry is driving the new economy,” said Matthew Flanigan, president of TIA.
The report noted that U.S. exports of cellular phones during the first half of this year dropped 18 percent compared with the same period last year, while U.S. imports of cell phones jumped 105 percent in the same time frame.
