Telefonica selects Nokia GPRS solution

HELSINKI, Finland-Spanish wireless operator Telefonica Mobiles Espana agreed to implement Nokia Corp.’s General Packet Radio Service core solution into its commercial mobile network, supporting more than 12 million subscribers.

Nokia also announced that Swiss operator DiAx activated the first nationwide GPRS mobile network in Switzerland using Nokia’s technology, allowing DiAx to offer GPRS services across its network covering more than 90 percent of the population.

“An early launch of packet radio services is essentially the first step toward [third generation] and operators can begin to introduce new mobile Internet services and applications today,” noted Petri Poyhonen, vice president of GPRS business program at Nokia Networks.
