Geoworks cross licenses technology with Ericsson

ALAMEDA, Calif.-Geoworks Corp. announced a cross-licensing agreement with L.M. Ericsson under which Ericsson will gain access to Geoworks’ flexible user interface patent in return for several Ericsson patents.

Geoworks said it would use the unnamed Ericsson patents to enhances its Mobile ASP product and its AirBoss Wireless Systems mobile data solutions. Exactly which Ericsson technologies Geoworks is licensing is under nondisclosure agreement.

This is the first cross-licensing agreement announced by Geoworks in relation to its Flex UI patent program, which the company claims is implicated in all WAP-related applications and devices. Geoworks called the addition of Ericsson to its licensing roster a significant milestone as it continues to fight for the patent’s recognition.

Phone.com Inc. has attacked the patent and the licensing structure around it through a lawsuit seeking to have the patent ruled invalid and unenforceable. Geoworks said it remains in negotiations with other companies for further cross-licensing activities.
