CANNES, France-Motorola Inc. and Turkish Global System for Mobile communications operator Telsim announced they signed a $1.5 billion contract calling for Motorola to provide infrastructure, handsets and associated services to expand the countrywide GSM network in Turkey.
The contract also calls for Motorola to implement a full trial overlay General Packet Radio Service core mobile data network. Motorola also will supply Telsim with the company’s Wireless Application Protocol-enabled minibrowser Timeport P7389 handsets on the GSM network.
“The world of mobile data is opening up a vast new market, with limitless opportunities for innovation and imagination to be translated into real-time, value-added services,” said Hakan Uzan, chief executive officer of Telsim. “Our subscribers will be looking for excellence in data access and delivery, as well as the continuing quality of the voice network.”
The expansion, which will allow Telsim to support more than 5 million customers, is expected to begin immediately, with the GPRS trial scheduled for the second quarter.
