REDWOOD CITY, Calif.-Siemens AG and Phone.com Inc. announced that Spain’s Airtel Movil selected Siemens to provide a commercial Wireless Application Protocol platform for wireless Internet-based services. Airtel, the second-largest wireless operator in Spain, plans to begin providing wireless Internet services to its customers later this month.
Under terms of the agreement, Siemens will provide Airtel a complete WAP solution, including the Phone.com UP.Link Server Suite. The WAP technology will enable Airtel’s Global System for Mobile communications customers to access online information services and applications using mobile phones equipped with a WAP browser.
Airtel has about 4.8 million wireless subscribers and a 33-percent share of the Spanish mobile market, Phone.com said.
