International WLL vendor now targets U.S. market

Adicom Wireless Inc., a Silicon Valley-based provider of wireless access equipment, plans to enter the U.S. market in the beginning of the new year, according to company President and CEO Adel Ghanem. The vendor already is scheduled to begin voice and data trials of its equipment with U.S. independent local exchange carriers.

Currently, the company’s wireless local loop products are deployed in China, Guatemala, Nigeria, the Philippines and Poland-markets where wireline networks are not prevalent and where WLL thus fills a need for basic telephony.

Adicom Wireless’ focus in the United States will be more targeted to high-speed wireless data applications for residential and small office/home office markets, said Ghanem, who declined to name the U.S. carriers with which the company is working.

“We entered the international markets first because the demand was there,” said Ghanem. “The [United States] and Western Europe are our main targets for the future. The economics make sense.”

WLL technology is being implemented in numerous markets around the world as an alternative technology to wireline service because of its quicker time to market and lower ongoing operating costs.

Adicom Wireless’ Aditus line of products uses wireless Internet Protocol and data-optimized channels to offer a higher throughput than is available by aggregating channels, said Ghanem.

Aditus products are based on advanced Code Division Multiple Access technology and offer data rates of up to 128 kilobits per second, full duplex. The privately held company plans to migrate the products, available for frequency ranges from 400 MHz to 5.7 GHz, to offer data rates of 1.5 Megabits per second.

“Our goal is to offer higher data rates and increase the services that can be provided,” Ghanem said.
