BT Cellnet connects GPRS call in commercial trial

SWINDON, United Kingdom-BT Cellnet, using Motorola Inc.’s Network Solutions Sector’s core General Packet Radio Services network solution, said it successfully achieved a live GPRS data transfer call over a Global System for Mobile communications network.

The call demonstrates the first stage of a full commercial GPRS field trial within a defined coverage area, which could be integrated into the BT Cellnet GSM network early next year, said Motorola.

BT Cellnet’s GPRS services allow subscribers to send and receive packet information via the GSM radio channels to other packet networks, such as the Internet or corporate intranets.

Motorola’s GPRS solution includes the services GPRS support node-which tracks packet-capable mobile locations and performs security functions-and the gateway GPRS support node-which interfaces with the external packet data networks to provide the routing destination for data to be delivered to the subscriber’s mobile terminal, Motorola said.
